Rest in Peace my Brother and old *school* bandito. Too bad we didn't get to put the trip together in time. My heart hurts. Until we meet again in that home not made by human hands eternal in the heavens. Well done good and faithful servant. SMIB.

Deanna & family: Our deepest condolences and thoughts are with you. We have lost an exceptional sapper and good friend. I can fondly remember the "fun and games" we experienced together during our time at 2 CER - both in 25 Sp Sqn and especially when Don was the RSM and I was DCO. He was a welcome face on a very early morning in Munich when he met my plane (naturally a cold German beer was next on his agenda) enroute to Oberammergau.

Don was an interesting Man! A people person if ever there was one, and infinitely likable too! He would always offer his hand in a firm handshake whenever he met up with me. A good handshake is something you never forget! Talk about first impressions! He was a "boy soldier", having joined the Army at age 16, dropping out of school to do so. He became a Field Engineer, also known as "Sappers", in the same group as Ron Bruce, another longtime friend of ours. He rose through the ranks quickly, and at a young age made it to CWO (Chief Warrant Officer), which was as high as you can go as an enlisted man in the Army. So being a go-getter as he was, he applied for a Commission and became a Captain! A few years later, he was promoted to Major and after a while, I guess he figured it was time to retire..which he did very slowly! 44 years of service to Queen and Country after all is said and done. I should mention that he was the Fire Chief in the Fredericton Junction Volunteer service, and I attended many fires with him during my time there. When I sought to rejoin the military in 1996-98, he wrote me a glowing letter of reference, which I'm sure helped my cause immeasurably. He was also a Freemason, and of course had to rise to the top of the food chain in that brotherhood! He was Worshipful Master of his Lodge for many years, and held almost every other key position in that fraternity. I visited with him at his home last summer and we discussed all things Masonic. He was a great guy, and I'm going to miss seeing his smiling face and hand - always ready for a shake, or to help.

I was stunned to see Don's announcement!
I remember his cheery smile and happy countenance at the Engineering School when I was working there.
I remember asking him for his autograph when the "Bomb Hunters" TV program was on, and he just laughed and gave me a hug.
He will be missed.
