Evert Fictorie Obituary

Evert Fictorie

The family of Evert Fictorie of Fredericton, NB wish to announce his passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital Tuesday September 9, 2025. Born September 1, 1929, in Hoogeveen, The Netherlands to the late Jantje (Vander Weide) and Gerrit Fictorie.

Evert will be dearly missed by his loving wife of almost 72 years, Jeltje (Jane), his three daughters; Trintje, Elizabeth (Gary), and Irene, and his son Gerrit (Denise), two sisters; Johanna Goudriaan of Ontario and Jantje (Henk) Buiter, and dear sister in law Sjaan Fictorie, of the Netherlands; Opa to eight grandchildren Malcolm (Amy), Gerrit (Amanda), Sarah, Patricia (Ben), Christopher, Brandon (Jen), Kailey (Mark) and Gregory, great Opa to twelve great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

After Evert left the Royal Dutch Navy, as Marine 1st Class, Evert and Jeltje immigrated to Canada with Baby Tina in a basket!  They wanted a better life then the Netherlands could offer at that time.  Evert was a skilled carpenter who took immense pride in every project he worked on. Three more little ones arrived in the next few years as the Fictories adjusted to life in Canada making their home on the Carlisle Road in Douglas.  Together with other Dutch newcomers, they were instrumental in beginning the Christian Reformed Church in Fredericton. They learned English and with Evert’s carpentry skills, the community was able to build a brand-new Church located on McAdam Ave. in Fredericton.  As the church grew he never hesitated to help with building projects.

Evert was a natural born gardener with a true love of the outdoors. His gardens were admired throughout the neighborhood and often served as the backdrop for cherished photos. He found joy in fishing, hunting, and walking in the woods, and in retirement, his camp in Zionville became his sanctuary—a place to relax, recharge, and connect with nature.

Besides his parents, Evert is also predeceased by five sisters: Jantje (Jannie) Ridout, Jantina Fictorie-Potkamp, Lammie de Die le Clercq, Gerda Fictorie, Femmie Fictorie-Homburg and his brother Willem Fictorie.

Please join Evert’s family for a Memorial Service at The Christian Reformed Church, 121 McAdam Ave. Fredericton, NB 2pm on Monday September 29th, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, his family would appreciate any donations in Evert’s memory to the NB Wildlife Federation or the Christian Reformed Church

Arrangements are in the professional care of Sunbury Funeral Home, Central Blissville, NB (506-368-2413). www.sunburyfuneralhome.com
